Born in St. Mary, Cameron initially recorded under the name Tony Rose, adopting 'Anthony Red Rose' to avoid confusion with Michael Rose, who at the time also performed under the name Tony Rose.〔Larkin, Colin (1998) ''The Virgin Encyclopedia of Reggae'', Virgin Books, ISBN 0-7535-0242-9, p. 244-5〕〔Room, Adrian (2010) ''Dictionary of Pseudonyms'', McFarland & Co.
